OCR technology for the digital authentication of customer data

Posted by Leyre Soto on June 20, 2019 at 9:00 AM

Today’s new digital environment has created great opportunities for both customers and companies to make business processes and transactions more agile. However, without face-to-face interaction, it can be difficult to identify and validate customer data during a transaction. The response to this challenge is OCR technology.

Thanks to its ability to recognize the data contained in an image, this technology allows users to authenticate data much more securely and accurately.

In this article, we explain what it is and what its benefits are.

What is OCR technology?

OCR (Optical Character Recognition) technology extracts and validates all the information in a document by analyzing an image. The software recognizes characters in data found in either a scanned document or photograph, so that it can then be read and stored by a computer. This technology reads textby recognizing the characters (letters or numbers) present in an image, then carrying out pixel-by-pixel analysis to match the characters to those stored in its memory.

The benefits of using OCR technology to incorporate customer data

OCR technology not only allows for the identification of a person in an online environment, but it also validates that the information is, indeed, correct and truthful. With it, you can digitalize forms, administrative documents and client data from customers’ ID cards, passports and driving licenses, and verify their data digitally. Thanks to this, it is much easier to create a safer environment and prevent fraud in an organization’s transactions.

OCR technology also contributes to a high-quality user experience, as users can be easily identified by photographing documents from any mobile device. Moreover, it is a technology that has been designed to be accessible to all users, as it can be integrated into any system using an API.

Signaturit’s OCR technology

At Signaturit, we are developing an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to automatically recognize, extract and validate data from an image in any European identification document. For this, we use Tesseract library, an OCR engine for reading images.

This European data identification project is funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program, which also recognizes Signaturit's efforts to contribute to a safer and more efficient environment for both individuals and corporations.  If you want to integrate authentication and verification systems for your customers’ data into your company, creating a fraud-free environment with safer transactions, click here to learn more.
