Today, many people suffer from hyperconnectivity: they are connected to work through their smartphone, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. At the same time, workplaces have increasingly overlapping technologies and, because companies often operate on a global scale, employee’s daily tasks are increasingly complex.
A study by Deloitte1 has placed stress and the need to simplify work processes in companies in the center of the debate among management experts.

On average, people consult their mobile devices 150 times a day and invest a quarter of their work activity to read and reply to emails. This activity leads to job stress, which is regarded as the second leading cause of health problems in the workplace and the reason for between 50 and 60% of sick leave, according to the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work.
Simplification as the solution
In some cases, as it often happens in organizations, finding a solution to this problem has led to further complications, adding more and more technology to departments. But according to recent research, the remedy is located precisely in the opposite direction: simplifying is they key.
The article of Deloitte's study referred to simplifying things at work indicates that company managers and HR managers have to help making daily life easier for its employees. In return, they will be more productive.
To do so, they have to draw on disruptive technologies that facilitate everyday tasks like traveling through the city (Uber) or staying in private flats (Airbnb). Deloitte experts draw some valuable lessons from these companies.
First, companies must simplify the technology they use, avoiding duplication and incompatibilities. It is also important to reduce certain stages of validation processes, reduce workloads and introduce good practices that limit the number of meetings to not distract employees too much.
Some might see these recommendations as a risk of losing productivity and, therefore, a fad that threatens the long-term survival of those who dare to implement them. But Deloitte data suggests otherwise: among the companies surveyed for the above article, 10% now have simplification programs, and 44% plan to implement them. That is, 5 out of 10 of the organizations are working in this direction.
How can I simplify processes in my organization?
Companies that want to start simplifying processes must recognize the problem first, and then create multidisciplinary teams dedicated to finding a solution. From there, experiment to reduce the number of meetings and/or incorporate technology that makes daily work processes easier for employees, even if it sometimes involves more complexity on the back-end.
